Day 1 – Day of procedure please take acyclovir (Zovirax®) as directed, to prevent cold sores. Take the pain medicine if needed. The dressings, if placed, remain on skin. Liquids only. Skin not covered by dressings turns dark and becomes dry. The face and neck are normally swollen. Doctor Kotler will call you tonight.
Day 2 – A quick check in the office. Starting today, the antibiotic ointment should be applied to the skin not covered by dressings.
Day 3 – If your face has dressings on it, you will have them removed in the surgicenter, under a brief anesthetic; Do not eat or drink anything after 11 P.M. the evening before coming to the surgicenter.
After dressing removal: The face is to be continually coated with the antibiotic ointment. Swelling begins to subside. “Weeping” may still be present. You may begin washing your face with the soap provided, in the afternoon.
Day 4 – Continue to apply the antibiotic ointment to the entire face. Ointment should be applied as often as necessary to keep entire treated area coated at all times. This ointment helps to soften and remove the old skin. Wash 3 times today, re-applying the ointment heavily. Do not let the skin become dry.
Day 5 – Wash three times and apply ointment to keep skin from being dry. Except when washing, the skin should be heavily coated with the ointment; never bare and never dry.
Day 6 or 7 – Continue coating the skin with ointment. It is possible a few spots of “soft crust” may still be present – don’t worry. They’ll come off in another day or so. We shall see you today in the office, and will have another instruction sheet and medications for the next phase of healing.
